Get inspired by the big Starck!

“Subversive, ethical, ecological, political, fun:
this is how I see my duty as a creator.”

Philippe Starck.

Im a huge fan of Philippe Starck – he does all the things that I really love about interior design! Lets get inspired by the big ones! These images are from Philippes Starcks design of MAMA shelter interior in bordeaux. He describes The schemes was intended to form sanctuaries from the outside world and establishing a relaxed atmosphere, which I think works to perfection!

I keep on talking about that interior design is not just about the room, but indeed about the frame – ALWAYS INCLUDE the walls, the ceiling, the floors in your styling! Get inspired by Starck he has done a stunning  job here – I especially love the deco of floor and ceiling, what do you think?

Check out the right image – do you recognize all the tips around the interior blogs? – Stacking books – Paint a wall,
make contrast – feel alive – Collect your images to create a piece of art – Include the floor – Mix old and new –  Mix materials

Take it out on your wall!

Today’s material – TILES!

The next couple of days, as promised, my focus will be on wall deco. Walls are a the frame of the interior playground but I believe the whole frame, whether walls, ceiling or floor should be included in the interior design to make a complete expression – you simply cant neglect the frame – there is no scene without a frame, its like a book with no words – so TAKE IT OUT ON YOUR WALL!

I love tiles – they add an edge to the room, a mix of materials, tiles, wallpaper, paint, wood etc. makes the room dynamic and alive! Personally my heart beats for the funkiest ones, but in the right mix – combined with plain surfaces, they become more modern and classic!

There are no limits in the use of tiles – we have passed the time where tiles only belong to the kitchen and the bathroom! Give your room a makeover – you don’t need to make a whole wall, just a couple of tiles will add an edge and bring it to life!

First, Ill show the famous artilles – I know its “old news”, but I still think they sticks!

I actually used artilles (from http://www.arttiles.dk) for a project at Saint Martins College of Art. The project was to design a bathroom for a couple living in the high end of London. Based on a description of their personal profiles, I decided to make a mixed-style bathroom with a funky but classic touch – my main colors were black, gold and petrol! Since the couple had met each other in London I wanted to include that fact in the interior design, to give it a personal touch without being a cliché! SO, stick to the wall – i drew a wall made by small black mosaic tiles and art tiles in petrol, black, white colors – the art tiles formed a skinny version of London Tower Bridge! Get inspired by something you love, something that makes you happy looking at and create your own personal wall art!

These ones are awesome and I haven’t seen them used anywhere in Denmark, thats a shame! I have a billion of ideas how to create the most funky bubble-room, but again if you mix materials and surfaces the bubble tiles can be quite classic as well – if you are into classic style go for clean surfaces, same color shades but different materials! Go bubblicious!

MORE FUNK! Can you imagine a whole wall of these – psychedelic maybe, but funk to perfection! These tiles are described

“Tiles of Playfulness Synergy of Light Colors, Impressionism and Tiles”!

If you can’t bare starring at your white tiles like me – go get some paint and make your own artwork! This one is made by Diva artworks http://www.divaartworks.com/Tiles.html , but why not do it yourself!

LAST BUT NOT LEAST! As much as I love the funky, crazy stuff I am totally amazed by gold and copper, and I can easily imagine myself in a room covered up in steel tiles – ITS SO CLASSY!!!!!!!

GO CRAZY ON YOUR WALLS – the next couple of days you’ll get more on wall deco, stay tuned and happy decorating!

A lot more walls to come on this blog!!

Why, ugly souvenirs?

Nobody likes them, nobody knows where to ”hide” them, and nobody dares to get rid of them, so why buy them? And even worse why give them to someone you actually like? Everybody (or MANY) spends a major amount of money buying them; everybody carries them all the way home! Everybody (ALMOST) lies when they get a souvenir-gift!

Don’t you? Well I do!

That’s why I have decided not to buy souvenirs anymore, at least not to people I like! What I do instead is buying stuff that I can use in my interior design – a storytelling-souvenir, not a mass produced, but a unique thing that I would love to look, a souvenir that reminds me of how, where, with whom I got it!

Ill share my most beloved travel pick-ups with you! Show me your favorite souvenirs!!

My Jordanian souvenir

First one is from Jordan! I went for a walk and saw this poster plastered on a board, saying “Experience Jordan”, standing outside a tourist office. They used it to keep the door from slamming – which means it was, as the lady in the office said, spoiled by the rain, and it was, but thats what I liked! I begged her to buy it, but she wouldn’t sell it, cause she didn’t have anything else to keep the door from slamming! I offered her to find something that could manage that task, but she refused! UNTIL the very last day of our holiday – I went to the shop, she looked at me, laughed, and gave me the spoiled poster plastered on wood, and I was so GRATEFUL! couldn’t get a better souvenir from Jordan!

Second one is brought home from Ghana! I stayed in Ghana for 5 month and almost everyday I walked by the lovely shoe-doctor on my way to work. Since it was somehow near 1000 degree, I wore flip flops, that obviously didn’t match his polish-kit – cause they were made of pure rubber! But he had something else that caught my eye and made me smile – his homemade shop-sign! Just before I went back to Denmark I asked him if I could buy it, he laughed loudly and said 6 dollars – now I have the best memory of my trip to Ghana, my everyday walk to work and the lovely shoe-doctor!

Give your wall a industrial touch!

If you can’t find a original store grid, no worries! This option is much easier and flexible – buy ´reinforcement-grid´(armeringsnet) for almost nothing! Cut it into whatever size you need and hang it on the wall, on the ceiling, the door… many cool options! Use it as a wall-deco, like I did with lights and art-stuff, or use it in the office to put all your “to do´s”, family photos etc. OR hang it on the ceiling, maybe spray paint it in your favorite color or several colors, hang different sizes of lightbulbs – only your creativity will stop you!

Check it out in any construction shop – in Denmark go to http://www.bygmax.dk or http://www.traelastogbyggemarked.dk

PLEASE send me an email or photos if you come up with any cool ideas!
